Walking Tips for the “Sand Labyrinth”

If you decide to  actively participate in the “Sand Labyrinth Project” we recommend to bring the following items:

  1. Stick/ branch or walking stick
  2. Journal
  3. I-pod with your personal music selection
  4. Digital Camera for photo documentation
  5. Information on how to draw the 5 circuit 5 minute labyrinth.

Site Selection:

  • The ideal site is the sand area of a baseball field or a beach area.
  • Baseball fields are more then ideal.  Most likely there is one in walking distance of your home.
  • They are only used seasonally for baseball playing and even when in use the sandlabyrinth can easily co-exist with the use of the field for baseball.  If the lines get trampled just redraw them and the labyrinth will emerge within minutes.

How to proceed:

  1. Once you get to the site, select the center of the labyrinth first, then continue with the process of drawing.  ( An instructional CD will be available soon).
  2. Once complete, take some quiet time, sit on the side and prepare internally for the walk.  Sit in silence or start  your I-Pod.  If you come with a friend, do not talk once you start your walks.
  3. Once ready, step up to the mouth of the labyrinth.  Pause for a moment and center yourself.  To focus your intent you may use a mantra like:  “I am a pilgrim seeking….   “  Do not let intentions become expectations.  Let go of expectations.
  4. Step into the labyrinth.  In case of the design that I use take the turn to the left and follow the path.   Walk slowly, do not rush to get to the center, allow yourself to calm down and just to be.
  5. If you feel moved to do so write in your journal as anything significant arises.
  6. Stay in the center as long a you wish.
  7. Once ready take the path out ( the left turn on the “sand labyrinth”.
  8. Once you come close to the exit you have a choice ( on this particular labyrinth design).  You can walk it again or exit or take a quick step back into the center.
  9. Important:  Once you return home tranfer your journal entries into your “Labyrinth Journal” Blog.
